Everything on the platform that trades needs a venue to trade on — and for a long stretch of a strategy's life, that venue should not be a real account. The platform paper exchange is the answer: a shared, platform-owned paper venue running on live Binance prices, available to every account from the first minute, with no API key, no signup at an exchange, and no funds at risk.
What it is#
When you start paper trading, the venue dropdown offers Platform Paper — Binance: simulated fills on live Binance prices — no account needed. Pick it (it is the default) and you have a working venue. Prices are the real, live market; only the fills and the capital are simulated, with the fee and slippage model described in paper trading.
You will not find it under Connected Exchanges — that tab lists accounts you added. The platform venue belongs to the platform; your part of it is the venue card that appears under My Trading, tagged Paper, with its own balance, its own positions and its own terminal.
Shared does not mean pooled: your balance on it is yours alone. A subscriber paper-trading a strategy you shared funds their own venue, not yours.
How a venue appears#
Nothing is created silently. You get a venue on the platform exchange only when you ask for one:
- Paper Trade on a strategy card opens Start Paper Trading — set the starting allocation (10,000 is prefilled) and submit.
- Create Strategy with the Trading Venue left on Platform Paper — Binance attaches the venue at birth.
- Map Strategy on the Venues page, with the toggle on Paper.
- A New Session for manual trading with Environment set to Paper.
Pressing Paper Trade again on a strategy that already has a platform paper venue does not create a second one — the amount is added to the existing balance as a deposit.
The starting allocation matters even though the money is simulated: position sizing works from the venue's balance, so a venue funded with 10,000 trades the way a 10,000 account would.
Paper on your own exchange#
If you have already connected an exchange, you can point a paper venue at it instead: fills stay simulated, but prices come from your own exchange's feed rather than the shared Binance one. That is the closest rehearsal there is for going live on that venue — same market data, same symbols, still zero risk.
What it will never do#
The platform paper exchange places no real orders, ever. Leverage settings do not apply to it — leverage is a live-venue concept — and asking a strategy to go live on it is refused: live trading requires a connected exchange account. The line between the two worlds is the one worth keeping sharp:
| Platform paper exchange | Your connected exchange | |
|---|---|---|
| API keys | none needed | yours, Direct or via a gateway |
| Prices | shared live Binance feed | your exchange's own feed |
| Fills | simulated | simulated (paper) or real (live) |
| Capital | simulated balance you set | your actual funds |
| Leverage | ignored | applies on live venues |
When a strategy has earned its way past paper, the path onward is going live — connect the exchange, allocate real capital, and keep the paper venue running beside it for an honest baseline.
